Police
Officers
In the 50's it was the Andy Griffith
Show, in the 60's it was Dragnet, in the 70's it was
Charlie's Angels, in the 80's it was Miami Vice, and now
it's NYPD Blue. All of these shows have inspired kids like
you to be police officers. I can show you how, but the first
thing you have to know is that there is a lot more to being
a police officer than driving cool cars and catching the bad
guy. It's a career that you have to learn, work at, and
accept the fact that you may sometimes be in serious danger.
Now, let's find out how you can be a police
officer.
First, we have to take you through
training. To start out you must be in very good physical
shape. You must have a high school diploma, and may even
pursue a college degree in criminal justice. Character is
also an important element. You have to go through a
psychiatric evaluation, that if you do not pass it, your
chances are already cut. You would be tested for drug use,
and a past criminal record, after all you can't fight crime
if you are committing it yourself. You sometimes must
undergo training in a law enforcement apprenticeship
program. Now you can start this exciting
career.
Let's get down to it; you want to
catch some bad guys. First you have to have a case.
Sometimes you can be sent on a criminal case, which may
involve crime labs, research, and interrogation. But the
other kinds of cases are emergencies and nonviolent crimes.
This is were you just go and make the arrest. Now, this is
were it gets dangerous. After criminals have committed a
crime, they might not have a problem resisting arrest, which
may mean walking over people like you. This is you have to
accept the possibilities of a crime being committed, were
instead of the peacemaker, you are the victim. But its not
all bad, you might work as a teacher. You could work as a
volunteer in the school systems, teaching kids how to keep
out of crime and drugs. This is like stopping the crime
before it starts. Now that takes a real hero.
So now, go take a bite out of
crime!
