Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Elizabeth was born into an upper middle class family in Johnstown, New York on November 12, 1815. Her parents had wanted a boy and were upset when she was born. All her life she worked hard to impress her parents that girls could accomplish anything.
She received an excellent education. When she was growing up girls only learned womanly arts and had very little formal education. She studied at the Johnstown Academy attending all male classes. Her classes included advance math, science and languages. Then she enrolled in Emma Willard's Troy Seminary. Not only did she receive an excellent education but she learned to do many things that at that time were only done by men. (such as riding a horse.)
Elizabeth's father was a professional judge. She studied law and learned about how cases of the time were handled. Her study of law helped her understand how badly women were discriminated agianst and what few rights they actually had. This was one of the many things that lead Elizabeth to believe that women needed to stand up for themselves.
Elizabeth attended many antislavery conventions. At one convention she and Lucretia Mott were denied the right to speak out. In 1851 Elizabeth meet Susan B. Anthony at a Temperance Convention. They shared the same viewpoints and started the American Woman suffrage association in 1896.
Elizabeth founded the National Woman Suffrage Association and worked for this cause for over 21 years. Women still had no rights. They were not allowed to speack out. Many other organizations only wanted moral corrections in society not suffrage.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton died in New York on October 26, 1902. In 1920, eighteen years after she died women gained the right to vote. Her cause still lives on in all of us. Her efforts will never be forgotten. She was one of the founders of the Women's Rights Movement.
I think Elizabeth Cady Stanton was one of the must influential women in the Women's Rights movement. She is a great role model for young girls today because she stode up for what she believed in.
