For:
Victoria Woodhull

1838-1927
Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for president. She ran in 1872 for the Equal Rights Party. Unfortunately she lost to Grant but she made a giant step for women in politics.

Could you imagine running for president? Well that is what Victoria Woodhull did. She broke the ice and went down in history for it. Victoria was born in 1838 in Ohio to a poor family. She had a girl and a boy who was mentally retarded.
Victoria believed in women's rights. This belief took her to New York. There Victoria and her sister, Tennessee, opened Woodhull, Claflin & Co.-Bankers and Brokers. This made them the first women stockbrokers in history.
In 1870, Victoria announced she would run for president. Victoria fought in Washington to get women the right to vote. She wanted this issue to become the 16th amendment. Unfortunately, she did not get this amendment passed.
At the election, in 1872, Susan B. Anthony took some women to the polls and forced the men in charge to let them vote. Susan B. Anthony got arrested for voting. Meanwhile Victoria was in jail because she was only 34 and in order to run for president she had to be 35. She was a woman not a man that might have been another reason she was jailed.
I think Victoria Woodhull was an extraordinary woman. She ran for president and fought for the right to vote for women.
