Golda Meir was Israel's first Prime Minister. She fought for the freedom of her country and for women everywhere. Golda Meir made her country a better place.
Golda Meir's Biography
Could you imagine being in charge of a country? Golda Meir did just that when she became the first woman Prime Minister of Israel. Golda was born on May 3, 1898. She grew up in Wisconsin but moved to Israel later.
Golda had always wanted women to be treated equally. She worked as the Secretary of Women Laborers Council. She also joined the society Pioneer Women. Golda was respected and when she was in Israel she became the first ambassador to the Soviet Union (Russia). That was another first for woman.
In 1969 Golda became the first woman Prime Minister of Israel. She made good relations with the US. She resigned in 1973. Golda made a huge impact for everyone. She helped Israel and women. Some men were surprised she could do it.
I think Golda Meir was a remarkable woman. She helped "break the ice" for woman to become leaders in government.
