Fiestas and Free Time

FREE TIME

At Mission San Jose, everybody loved Free Time. They loved to dance. Any kind of music, especially slow music, was the kind they liked. They also liked to play games. Fun! Fun! Fun! They played games like tag. Also, adults and children joined in tug-of-war. Some of them also just relax. Just lying down is relaxing. You can't forget just enjoying nature. Some of them just wander around, looking at trees and other nature. A lot of them sung. They sang songs like "El Quelele". Free time was the best part of the day!

Games and Music

The Indians played many games at the mission. Some of the most comon games at the mission were tag, foot races, and gambling. They also played hoop and pull alot. Sometimes they played guessing games and the boys challenged the girls to a match of tug-of-war. But some of the Indians like to just swim in the ocean. The Padres played dangerous games like bear and bull fights. Playing games is one thoing that the Indians did in there spare time.

Music was the other thing they did in there spare time. The Indians sang and danced with bells jingling. They usually sang at fiestas and other parties. Padres played instruments like Flutes, violins, bells, and the organs. They sang lots of spanish songs like El Cantico de Alla Alabado, Santa barbra Folk song, and El Quelele. Some Indians sing when they work to help enjoy themselves. Singing and playing games happened every day at the missions.

Fiestas

Fiestas were important celebrations to enjoy and relax. Sometimes they would have a fiesta to honor the Saints or the founding of the missions. They would also have a fiesta if an important person camre to visit the mission. The Native Americans and padres liked having fiests because that is when they got to eat the best food! Usually a whole pig was roasted and lots of tortillas and other good food was served, too. There was always dancing and singing at a fiesta, too.
