In Star Wars robots are almost as numerous as aliens! The level of intelligence shown by them, as well as their ability to have personalioties and feelings, is amazing! Of course, some droids, like the Probe Droid or ASP droid (labour droid), have no need for personalities. A better known example of this is the battle droids from Episode I: The Phantom Menace. But it seems whenever droids are needed to deal with people for some of their time, they always have personalities. And the intelligence! Some droids, like the battle droid, are only smart enough to perform the task they are made for, but droids like C-3PO and R2-D2 are intelligent in all subjects. One thing we have heard is that these two droids have escaped memory wipes. This is basically like having your hard disk develop intelligence and a personality because you never format it. But this sounds just like the neural networks based intelligence we talked about. Droids are able to "learn" if they can "grow up" without being "brainwashed". Only stuff that is needed to make the droid perform its original function is hard-coded in. Droids come in all shapes and sizes in Star Wars. They are usually made so that they can perform their tasks as effectively as possible. We talked about how humanoid is not the best shape for a droid, so you may be thinking that C-3PO is an exception to this rule, but he isn't. He is a diplomatic droid, and since this means he'll be dealing with diplomats, which are mostly human or humanoid, I'm sure they'd be more comfortable talking to a human-like droid than a floating eye or something of that type.
