Team 18 Presents... Everything I Know About Science I Learned From Science Fiction

N a v i g a t i o n
The technology behind the laser weapons pictured in so many science fiction series.
Is there other intelligent life in the universe? Team18 tries to answer this question, as well as debating what kind of technology they might have, what they might look like, and more. Then they look at it from the perspectives of our different science fiction series.
The technology behind the faster than light drives in science fiction series.
What power source will we have in the future? Will it be atomic, solar, or will we scoop energy out of the very fabric of space itself?
What will our future be like? Here Team 18 explores all the possible futures that each science fiction series offers.
Here you can find out about the technology behind robots and robotics, as well as the probability of things like AI (Artificial Intelligence), speech recognition, and artificial personalities.

Laser Weapons - Dune

Dune is the only series that has what are probably actual laser weapons. As discussed on the front page for laser weapons, if you came up with an extremely high powered laser and miniaturized it enough to fit in your hand, you would have a lasgun, which is what the weapons in Dune are called. Nobody on Team18 has read the last Dune book, but so far it has been revealed that lasguns can cleave a person down the middle by simply holding down the trigger. This implies a laser, because if it was some type of perticle/beam weapon like the ones in Star Wars, it would emmit bolts, not one straight line like a laser does. There is also proof that heat is generated by lasguns. As a last peice of info: lasgun beams are blue.

Lasgun beams in Dune are not used very much because of their reaction with shields. Instead of merely deflecting the beam of a lasgun, energy shields in Dune create an atomic explosion when hit by a lasgun beam. This will obviously kill both the assasin an the target, which makes knives or other subtle weapons more useful in Dune. Yet even then there is some difficulty in slipping a knife through a shield. If it is done too fast, the shield will quickly repel the knife, knocking it away. But if it it done to slow, it won't carry enough momentum to hurt the intended target.
