In Star Wars, interplanetary travel is acheived by "jumping to hyperspace". This is acheived by propelling a spacecraft to greater-than-light velocity and into hyperspace. Quoted from the Star Wars Encyclopedia, p. 135: "Hyperdrive engines are powered by fusion generators efficient enough to hurl shups into a dimension of space-time that can only be reached by faster than light speeds." This explains a lot! That is why Han Solo had to make the "jump to light speed" before going to hyperspace. As we all know, if he only made it to light speed, it would take years to get anywhere at all! "Hyperspace converges with realspace, so that every point in realspace is associated with a unique point in hyperspace. If a ship travels in a specific direction in realspace prior to jumping to hyperspace, then it continues to travel in that direction through hyperspace. Objects in realspace cast 'shadows' in hyperspace that must be plotted to avoid collisions. Galactic travel took a quantum leap forward with the discovery that, with the use of a hyperdrive, a starship can exceed the speed of light and enter a dimension that takes advantage of the wrinkles in the fabric of real space.
