First of all, let me get this straightened up. Star Wars takes place in a galaxy far, far, away. It does not take place in our future. There is no Earth in this galaxy. Although it is not very plausible, I read somewhere in one of my Star Wars novels that humans were sprinkled around the galaxy, and did not originate on one planet. But I'm getting off the point. Timelines have been made for Star Wars, cataloging all the books, movies, and comics into particular times (usually measured in their relationship with either Episode IV: A New Hope or Episode VI: Return of the Jedi). The latest peices in the Star Wars series are being put into a entirely new series, called Star Wars: The New Jedi Order. I do not know if this is just a triology or something like that, but given that the two books in this series are written by different authors, I would guess that all books taking place in the time period of 25+ years after A New Hope will be catalogued under the New Jedi Order series. Since Star Wars isn't exactly one big series, just a bunch of little ones, all I can tell you is what I've read so far and what I think is going to happen. I have only read about ¾ of the way through the first book in the New Jedi Order series, but I can summarize what is happening. Basically, an alien race from outside the galaxy is coming to destroy the galaxy that our heroes are living in. They use creatures instead of machines, like living comets and flying missles. They are even able to communicate through specialized creatures to other places in the galaxy where those creatures are being carried. They use interesting organic weapons to destroy planets, like a creature able to pull down the moon from the sky, and beetles that destroy the atmosphere. They have technology able to rip away energy sheilds. The future looks pretty bleak for our heroes. Buy the latest book the find out more!
