Virginia

        The capital of Virginia is Richmond. It is the 10th state. It became a state on June 25, 1788. The population is 6,285,931. The name comes from the "The Virgin Queen of England." It got it's nickname, "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there. The state motto is "Thus Always Tyrants." The state bird is the cardinal. The state tree is the flowering dogwood. The state flower is the American dogwood.  Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" is the state song.

        It was founded in 1607. Benedict Arnold burned Richmond and St. Petersburg for the British in 1781.  General Charles Cornwallis surrendered in Yorktown, Virginia to end the Revolutionary War.
