Vermont

        The capital of Vermont is Montpelier. It is the 14th state. It became a state on March 4, 1791. The population is 566,619. Its nickname is "The Green Mountain State." The name Vermont comes from "ver mont" which is French for "green mountain." The state motto is "Freedom and Unity." The state bird is the hermit thrush. The state tree is the sugar maple. The state flower is the red clover. Hail Vermont is the state song.

        Vermont was the first state admitted to the Union under the Constitution. Before it became one of the original 13 colonies, it was an independent republic who coined its own money, ran its own postal service, and was self governing.
