        The capital of Texas is Austin. It is the 28th state. It became a state on December 29, 1845. The population is 17,348,206. The name Texas is from an Indian word, tejas, which  means friends. The nickname is "The Lone Star State." The motto is "Friendship." The state bird is the mockingbird. The state tree is the pecan. The state flower is the bluebonnet. Texas, Our Texas is their state song.

        Texas was originally owned by Spain and was a part of Mexico when Americans first arrived in the early nineteenth century. Six nations have ruled Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.
