South Carolina

        The capital is Columbia. Population in the state in 1990 was 3,599,618. The state motto is "While I Breathe I Hope."  The state bird is the Carolina wren and the state flower is the yellow jasmine. The state tree is the Carolina palmetto and the song is Carolina. The name came from King Charles I of England.  In 1703, South was added to name to show the geographical location of the state located south of North Carolina.
