The nicknames for Maryland are the "Old Line State" and the "Free State."  Maryland was admitted to the Union on April 8, 1788. Maryland was the 7th state of the United States. The land area of Maryland is 9,891 square miles (25,618 square kilometers). The total area of Maryland is 10,577 square miles (27,394 square kilometers). The population of Maryland, as of 1990, was 4,781,468 people. Maryland also is home to the major league baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles.
