        The capitol of Louisiana is Baton Rouge. The state flower is the magnolia. The pelican is the state bird. The state tree is the bald cypress. The nickname is the "Pelican State."  Louisiana was admitted to the union on April 30, 1812.   It was the 18th state. The land area of Louisiana is 44,930 square miles (116,369 square kilometers). The total area of Louisiana is 48,523 square miles (125.674 square kilometers). The population of Louisiana, as of 1990, was 4,219,973.
