Georgia

            Georgia's capitol is Atlanta. The 1996 summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia's state flower is the Cherokee rose. Georgia's state bird is the brown thrasher. The state tree is the live oak. Georgia has many nicknames. The most well known are the "Peach State" and the "Empire State of the South." It was admitted to the Union on January 2, 1788. It was the 4th state introduced to the country. Its land area is 58,073 square miles (150,409 square kilometers). Georgia's total area is 58.876 square miles (152,488 square kilometers). The population of the state in 1990 was 6,478,216 people.

            The founder of Georgia was James Oglethorpe. He founded the state in 1732. Atlanta is home to the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. You can also tour Juliette Gordon Low's home in Savannah, Georgia. She founded the Girl Scouts of America organization.
