  So what's a Narwhal?

A Narwhal is an animal that is related to whales. Narwhals have long horns on their heads. The males usually have one horn. The females have two. Narwhals are shy and like to stay away from humans. They live in groups of about eight. The largest group of Narwhals is twelve.  They are sometimes called the "Underwater Unicorn".

What are their horns used for?

Narwhal's horns are actually teeth. They use them to bash through ice and in fights for territory. They also may use them to hunt food. Narwhals horns can grow to about 8 feet! What would you do with a horn like that?

      Why are Narwhals almost extinct?

They are almost extinct because of their horns! Their horns are similar to ivory, a rare substance made from an elephants' tusk. People poach Narwhals for their horns.   Sadly, there is no law against this.  Narwhals are extremely  rare, so many people have not heard about them. I wonder if  the President has heard about them!WB01590_.gif (2469 bytes)
