The ThinkQuest team ran an essay contest in our school to find out about heroes and heroines in our daily lives. Here are some of the winning essays submitted.

A Survivor.

There have been a lot of heroes over the past. People think that you have to be strong to be a hero. (That's not true.) There are a lot of heroes just like you and me. Hercules is a hero. But, did you know that heroes really don't have to be s SUPER HERO!?

I have a hero. His name is Leonard Corcoran, and he is a grandfather, a husband, a carpenter and a survivor of World War II. He was in the army and he survived! He is healthy and lives a good life. After his experience in World War II he fell in love with Ruth. They got married and are now living in Bradford, Massachusetts. They have more than eight wonderful grandchildren. They go on family trips and are having no trouble at all surviving the rest of their adventures in life.

He plays with me and tells me that he will teach me how to make things with wood and how to put things together. We will try to make the best fun out of the years to come. He is getting older and has a hearing aide. I believe in him and and I have trust in him. I hope he will live and be active for a long time.

He is my hero, my grandfather, a husband, a carpenter and A SURVIVOR!

My Dad

My Dad is my hero because he is a very good firefighter. He has saved a lot of lives. He saved a man from choking to death. He also had to take a fire hose from the first floor of a burning building to the third floor. There were parakeets still trapped in the building. My Dad and his crew got the birds out safely. My Dad was Firefighter Of The Year for bringing a man back to life from a heart attack.

My Dad is also my hero because he helps me with my Quad when it is broken. After he fixes it he takes me riding the next weekend. My Dad takes me plowing snow in his truck with him. Sometimes we have to get up at four o'clock in the morning to plow. We usually go and get a coffee.

My Dad bought me a puppy. She is a yellow lab. Her name is Sandra. She is very wild. We have fun together. My Dad makes roaring fires in the fireplace. They are cozy and warm. Dad and I get the wood from my Uncle and stack it on our deck. My Dad takes our family to Nova Scotia. We have a camp in Clementsvale, Nova Scotia. We have lots of friends up there. We go swimming, fishing, and riding. My Dad and I pick blueberries. My Mom makes blueberry pancakes and muffins. My Dad also takes me to my Uncle's camp in Maine. We go fishing and hunting there. We bring our Quads and have lots of fun. We usually go for the weekend. Once a year we go on a father-and-son canoe trip with our friends and relatives. My Dad and I are good buddies. I love him and he loves me.

My Hero

A hero is a person that you think is special. Most people think a hero is somebody that saves people. That is not true. A hero is really any person you think is special. You could be a hero. But I picked my great-grandmother because I think she is very, very special. When you are hurt or sick she is always there for you. If you are mad and need a little talk, she is right by your side. Also, when we go over her house she plays with us. We either play cards or play with her dolls. But, I don't care what we play because what makes the game fun, is that my great-grandmother is there. She is also very funny. Once at Halloween she pretended she was a vampire!

Her favorite place to go is to the beach with me. We swim or find animals. It is always the best place to go. Sometimes I go to her house and watch scary movies. I love her so very much! I don't know how I could live without her!

Someone I admire is my Dad. There are many reasons why I admire him. He is nice to me. I can't tell you how nice, because he is nice on a daily basis. He has a bad knee, but plays sports with me. Like the times he comes skiing with me, even though the doctor tells him no. He also taught me everything I know in math, history, ancient civilizations, geography, plants and animals. He also taught me how to read, the alphabet, and how to make my bed. Making my bed, now that's an important issue! My father cares for me all the time. He could never care more about me! Last, but not least, I admire him because he is my dad.

Tyler Call Grade 4

My Heroine

I think a hero should be a person who tries to help and will make things better. They are kind and generous to others, smart and brave no matter what the outcome. So, if someone is in trouble they will be there. Maybe everyone can be a hero if they just try. I would have to say my Mom is my heroine because every single day she takes care of me and my brother and sister. On the weekdays she goes to work and rushes home to pick us up at school. I really don't know how she does it. Plus, she is the PTO president at Fox School. I have a million after-school programs that she has to come and pick me up at like skiing and chorus. My Mom is so awesome and this is why she is my heroine.

Caitlin Brown Grade 4

Meme, My Hero

My Meme is my hero. She shows acts of respect, responsibility, she's trustworthy, and most of all she cares about everyone. Meme will always take care of you when your sick or injured. She will make sure you're comfy and warm if you stay at her house. She's willing to take you where you need to go, and get you there on time. Meme will always keep her promise or go out of her way for you if you ask. If you need someone to cheer you on at a basketball or softball game, she will always be there for you. Meme is a person that is trustworthy. When you need her she will come or if you ask her to do something for you she will get it done as soon as possible. Of all the things my Meme is good at, she is best at giving you advice. She knows pretty much everything that happened ever since the1930's. She will give you advice on personal things and helpful things for a story or report. She will help give you information about French stuff especially when it comes to French words. Although French isn't the only thing she knows. She knows about the Depression, World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War, The Nuclear Age, The Space Age, The Turn of the Century, and many more events in history. She may not have the sharpest brain in the world, but she still can tell you stories about her life, my Pepe's life, and about things in history that happened in her lifetime. My Meme has many good qualities, but I think caring for people is her best. She will watch you and care for you whenever you are sick. She will either go to your house or bring you to her house. But either way, she is a Meme, and the best hero someone could have.

For example, I wanted to be a pro snowboarder, and he said that if that's what I wanted, we needed to go and get everything I needed. He is always there for me when I am sick. When I went camping once, I had a migraine and we were all out of medicine. My Dad had to go to the store and get some. On the way to the store he was speeding, so he could get there before the store closed, and he got stopped by the police! The policeman came up to the car and said, "What's the rush?" My Dad said, "My son is having a migraine and I need to get to the store before it closes. Then the policeman said, "Oh, then go ahead...it happens to my kid all the time." My Hero

My Dad is my hero because he once saved my life. When I was a baby I was choking on a lollipop as he was leaving. My Mom called, "Chuck! Chuck!" and he pulled back in. He came out of his truck and he put his arms around me and just like pulled a punch. He pulled and pulled and pulled and the lollipop came out onto the ground.! Then my father went to work. I think I was really scared because choking is really scary. I can't even believe that happened to me. I'm glad my Mom got to call my Dad before he left. I am so lucky to have a father that's nice and helps me out a lot. That's why I love my father.
