Earth

Earth is the third planet from the sun. Earth's average distance from the sun is 93 million miles. Earth is the only planet which supports life in the solar system. Earth is the only planet not named after a mythological god.

Planet of Life

Earth is the only planet that has living creatures. Earth is a planet of life. There are billions of species like bacteria, animals, fish, and other life forms here on Earth. Earth also has lots of land forms, such as mountain ranges, volcanoes, rivers, lakes, forest, and much more. More than 70 percent of the Earth is covered with water. Water can't be found as a liquid on any other planet.

Earth's Atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere is made up of mostly nitrogen and oxygen with traces of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and argon. Our average temperature here on Earth is 60*F. But temperatures vary from -130*F to 136*F.

The Four Seasons

Earth has four seasons and they are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis. The axis always points in the same direction toward the North Star. Sometimes the northen hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun and the southern hemisphere is tilted away. This is the day when summer begins for everybody that lives in the north. We call this the summer solstice. Winter begins for everybody in the south and this is called the winter solstice. This day is usually on July 21.

September 21 and December 21 are Earth's two equinoxes. An equinox is when we have equal day and equal night.

The One and Only Moon

Earth has only one moon which is 2155 miles in diameter. Since the Earth only has one moon, it doesn't have a name. We just refer to it as the Moon with a capital "M". The Moon is heavily cratered, just like Mercury. The Moon is the only place humans have visited besides Earth.
