Venus

Venus is the second planet from the sun. It's average distance from the sun is 67.6 million miles. It is called the Sister Planet because it is almost the same size as Earth. Venus was named after the Roman goddess of love. Venus is 7,565 miles in diameter. Venus's average temperature is 900*F! Unlike most other planets, Venus has no moon.

Strange Mishaps

Venus's revolution around the sun is 225 days long, which is strange because Venus's rotation is 243 days long. It is the only planet in the solar system who has a rotation longer than a revolution (a day longer than a year). If you were born on Venus, you would be one year old and not one day old yet!

Venus's Atmosphere and Weather

Venus has an atmosphere made of mostly carbon dioxide with 3.5% nitrogen and 0.5% of carbon monoxide, argon, sulfur dioxide, and water vapor mixed together. This atmosphere causes a lot of pressure, almost 90% more than here on Earth. Venus's atmosphere traps sunlight and the sun's heat causes the runaway greenhouse effect. That is why it is almost twice as hot as Mercury, even though Mercury is closer to the sun.

Venus has very strange weather conditions caused by thick atmosphere and high temperatures. The winds above the clouds and the atmosphere speed around Venus at 200 miles per hour. But the winds at ground level can barely make a flag flutter. Venus has intense lightning storms. Probes that landed there recorded a record of 25 flashes of lightning per second, with crashes of thunder.

Venus's clouds are made of sulfuric acid, which can burn holes through wood, clothes, and skin.

Venus's Topography

Venus has a surface of rolling plains which were caused by lava flows. There are a few hills, valleys, and some mountains. That is nothing compared to Earth's canyons, oceans, and high mountains. Venus has one mountain range, called the Maxwell Montes. The highest mountain in Maxwell Montes reaches over 35,000 feet which is one mile higher than Mount Everest.
