MATERIALS NEEDED

3 similar-sized hard-cover thick books

PROCEDURE

1. Place all the three hard-cover books with the spines upward.
2 . Hold them together firmly close to your chest.
3. Push the middle book upward so it is higher than the other two books.
4. Firmly hold all the books away from your body, keeping them tight together.
5. When you release the pressure on the books, the middle book slide down.
6. Next, rest the books on the table.
7. With your hands holding only the two outer books, slide them back and forth.

RESULT

All of the different movements of the books resemble earthquake faults with much uplifting and slipping.

WHY?

When you force or release pressure on the books the middle book can slide downward and upward which demonstrates the dip slip fault movement.

When the books are rested on the table and the outer books are moved sideways, the action shows a strike slip fault movement. This kind of movement is sideways or parallel.
