Tulum

Past

  • WHO built it: The Mayans.
  • WHAT it was: a walled city named Tulum which stands on a cliff over looking the Caribbean Sea.
  • WHEN it was built: They began settling in around 200 AD and were at their highest point between 14th and 16th century.
  • WHERE:On the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
  • WHY: Tulum was used for protection and religious ceremonies.
  • HOW they built it: They built it out of stone.

  • WHO: John L. Stephen and Frederick Catherwood.
  • WHAT it is: A walled city named Tulum which stands on a cliff over looking the Caribbean Sea.
  • WHEN: 1842.
  • WHERE: On the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
  • WHY is it important: It is a beautiful example of Mayan architecture, and many of the carvings and structures are clues to Mayan life.
  • HOW did they discover it: They heard rumors and stories about ancient Maya cities.
