SouthWest Indian Archaeology - Mesa Verde
Past
WHO built it: The Anasazis which means "Ancient Ones", but we call them Ancestral Puebloan Peoples because Anasazi also means "Ancient enemies".
WHAT it was: Mostly pueblos under ciffs.
WHEN it was built: 1-1300 AD.
WHERE: In U.S. Four Corners - where the borders of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah meet.
WHY: For protection and shelter.
HOW: Carved out of the side of a hill.
Present
WHO: Francis Atansio Dominguez and Silvstre Velez de Escalante.
WHAT: Mesa Verde or as they described in their journal "pueblos which looked like those in New Mexico".
WHEN: In 1776.
WHERE: In U.S. Four Corners - where the borders of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah meet.
WHY is it important : Because in later years archaeologists knew where to go to learn about the Ancestral Puebloan Peoples culture.
HOW did they discover it: By accident, on a journey to a mission.
