The Dig
Inca Ice Maiden Machu Picchu |
South American ArchaeologyIn South America, the land and climates range from the seacoast to the Andes Mountains, often with rainforest between. Many times these climates are helpful to the archaeologists searching for lost remains protected by the arid Western coast climate, or the cold of the mountains. South American archaeology has focused mainly on learning more about the Inca culture. From the time of Pizzaro in 1502, to Hiram Bingham in 1911, to the present search for other Inca ancestors today, many people are interested in the origins, detailed culture and heritage of this civilization. I have explored two Inca sites: Machu Picchu, a hidden city in the Andes Mountains, and the recent find of the Inca Ice Maiden.
