Past

  • WHO built it: English settlers.
  • WHAT it was: First permanent English settlement in America and the capital of the colony of Virginia until it was moved to Williamsburg in 1699.
  • WHEN it was : May 13, 1607 and many seasons after.
  • WHERE: Southeast corner of Virginia on the James River near the intersection with the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • WHY: To help settle America for King James I.
  • HOW: They built a city surrounded by a log fort for protection.


    Present

  • WHO: Mary Jeffrey Gault was the first to begin excavations to rediscover Jamestown.
  • WHAT: Discovered the corner of the rebuilt fort church from the original settlement.
  • WHEN: 1893.
  • WHERE: Along the bank of the James River.
  • WHY is it important: Because we now know more about the history of the original settlement.
  • HOW did she discover it: She bought 22 1/2 acres along the James River near the "old church tower" and began excavating the land.
