WHO built it: English settlers.
WHAT it was: First permanent English settlement in America and the capital of the colony of Virginia until it was moved to Williamsburg in 1699.
WHEN it was : May 13, 1607 and many seasons after.
WHERE: Southeast corner of Virginia on the James River near the intersection with the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
WHY: To help settle America for King James I.
HOW: They built a city surrounded by a log fort for protection.
Present
WHO: Mary Jeffrey Gault was the first to begin excavations to rediscover Jamestown.
WHAT: Discovered the corner of the rebuilt fort church from the original settlement.
WHEN: 1893.
WHERE: Along the bank of the James River.
WHY is it important: Because we now know more about the history of the original settlement.
HOW did she discover it: She bought 22 1/2 acres along the James River near the "old church tower" and began excavating the land.
