Hieroglyphs
The Egyptian language was written in pictures.  This kind of writing is called hieroglyphics.  Each character is called a hieroglyph.  Sometimes the pictures meant exactly what they showed.  The pharaoh's name was always written inside an oval border called a cartouche.
Try and see how many hieroglyphics you can learn to write. Also  Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs are one of the oldest recorded languages.  It was the earliest script used and the longest lived.  And they sometimes they may make up other kinds of pictures.

Materials: 
Large butcher block paper (5 PCs)
6x9 styrofoam PCS
stylus sticks or dull pencils
Paint
Large Brushes
Mural Visuals
Preparation: Copy handout
Time: Two 50 minute class times.
 Project: 1. Students draw "Egyptian life " scenes ( use visuals)
              2. Each child prints one time/put print next to each other.
              3. To occupy those finished.  Have them print again on 
                   construction  paper. Paper to keep.

  Rosetta stones

Grade: 6
The Rosetta Stone was a slab carved with symbols in languages found by archeologists. When researchers studied the slab, they were able to figure out what hieroglyphic symbols meant by translating the hieroglyphs against the known languages found on the slab.

Materials:
Manila Paper
Hieroglyphic Handout
Markers
Scrap Paper
Preparation: Copy Handout
Time: Three 40 minute class times.
Project:
1. Each student starts with 1 sheet of paper/handout.
2. Students write a paragraph about themselves.
3. Students translate information into symbols.
4. Write symbols vertically on manila paper.
5. Add border design.
6. Color whole symbols.
(brown markers look the best on manila paper.)
