What Made This Pioneer Famous: |
While he was helping the saddle-maker in New Mexico, Kit Carson became a very good trapper. He also learned a lot about Indians. He later was a guide for John Fremont when he wanted to go to California. Fremont told others about his trip with Kit Carson through the Rocky Mountains and this made Kit Carson famous. |
| Interesting Facts: | He fought in the Mexican-American War in 1846. He was a leader of some of the troops that went from New Mexico to California. After the war, he went back to New Mexico and started to run a ranch. Kit Carson helped organize a troop in the Civil War. He mainly fought against the Navaho Indians and they surrendered to him. Kit Carson made the Navahos travel from Arizona to New Mexico and this was known as the "Long Walk." |
