Jim and Jamie Willrett write the following about participating in the farm tour:
The J. Willrett Farms (Jim and Jamie Willrett) is a farming operation producing corn, soybeans, and beef cattle. Jamie is a fifth generation cattle feeder. We have been hosting the Farm Tour for Inner City Children since it first started.
We have had an 8-row combine and a large diesel tractor on display for the children to investigate. They also could walk into the cattle barns to see the cattle up close. We would show them a bushel basket full (30 lbs.) of the feed one head of cattle would eat in a day consisting of whole shelled corn, corn gluten, liquid corn by-product, chopped hay, supplements, and a 5-gallon pail of water which each head of cattle would drink in a day.
They were also interested in seeing the whole ears of corn in the husk as it comes off the plant at harvest. Most of them complained of the odor and a few would not get off the bus because of the odor. The adults with the group were quite interested in the farming operation. We have always provided each child with educational material on beef and agriculture to take home with them.
