Farm Machinery

Tractor in Field We interviewed Marlin Anderson, an area hog and grain farmer; Gary Ikeler, an employee of a farm service cooperative; and Dave Benson who is an animal nutrition/feed specialist for an AG cooperative to learn more about farm machinery. We wanted to know what kinds of machines are used on a farm and what companies make those machines.

Here is a list of those farm implement companies that our interviewees came up with:

John Deere
Case-IH
White
Ford-Vertille
Massey-Fergusson
Ford-New Holland
Agco-Cleaner
Knight
Bobcat
Caterpillar
M&W
New Idea
Bush Hog
Auger Cultivator

We asked our interviewees to tell us which pieces of machinery were most important on the farm and what they were used for. Below is a table of the machines they mentioned.

Farm Implement Description
Tractor

The tractor is the main piece of machinery for the farmer. Tractors are the work horse. They pull other machinery like plows, discs, planters, sprayers, cultivators, drags, wagons, and many others.

Planter & Drill

Planters are used to put the seed into the ground in rows with a certain depth. Planters are used mainly for corn and soybeans. Drills are used for many small grains like oats, grasses, alfalfa, wheat, and sometimes soybeans.

Combine

A combine is a large machine that harvests the crop after the crops are full grown. It separates the crop stalk from the grain.

Sprayer

A sprayer is used to apply chemicals and insecticides to crops and land. When weeds grow and insects come in the corn or beans, it hurts the growth of the stalks and then the farmer can't grow as much.

Plow & Disc

The plow is used to bury residue and to loosen soil for a new seed bed. A disc is used to chop up crop residue or in the spring to level the ground to prepare for planting. Another name for this equipment is a field cultivator.

Auger

Augers are machines that transport grain or feed. The auger is run by electricity or gas engines. Augers are used all year round. Some parts of the auger are: shaft, flighting, drive pulleys, and the spout. Augers are used on combines, in fields, with bins, and in elevators.

Wagon

Wagons are portable storage units that carry grain from the fields to the storage bins. Wagons are used in the Fall (for the harvest) and the rest of the year to move out of the bins. Some parts of the wagon are: the wagon box, wheels, and the tongue.

Farmers can either buy the equipment for use on their farm, but that is very expensive. The farmer can also rent the equipment from a farm implement dealer. The farmer must decide what is best for his situation.

Planter

We asked our interviewees what companies sell seeds for farmers to plant. Below is a list of those companies they came up with:

FS-Seed
Hughes
Pioneer
Crows
Lowes
Northrop-King
DeKalb Pfizer/Monsanto
Asgrow
Garst
Burrus
Golden Harvest
Dairyland
Gutwein
Wyffel's
Henkel
Great Lakes
Cargill
Mycogen
Renk
