Kimberly Buck, Information Services Coordinator, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum very kindly replied to our e-mail about how the Museum responds to requests for permission to use their images and information.  This is what she wrote:

Madeline and friends,
My name is Kimberly Buck, and I'm the webmaster at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona.  I'm very impressed with your e-mail and your understanding of copyright. In fact, you may know more about this issue than I do. We don't have a rights and reproductions department of any kind, but perhaps I can help a bit.

When we buy images from artists/photographers, we usually have them sign an agreement that allows us to use the image in any way.  Examples of the way we use images include our newsletter, our website, advertisements, articles in magazines about the Desert Museum, and signs at the Museum itself.

Sometimes, the artists/photographers are willing to sign a more broad agreement that allows us to lend their images for other non-profit educational purposes.  So if you were to ask for the use of an image, you could use one of these.

On the other hand, some artists/photographers only want their image used once - this is usually referred to as a one-time use fee.  We publish books here at the Desert Museum, and a lot of the images used in those books were purchased as a one-time use fee.  Now that we are putting a lot of our publications on the web, we are bummed that we purchased the images in this "narrow" way, because we don't have permission to use them in our online version of the books.

As far as how often kids ask for copyrighted material, lots of kids ask for information, and a very few have asked for images -- usually of desert animals & plants like the javelina, gila monster, saguaro cactus, and ocotillo.  We gladly provide the information, but when it comes to images, we either refer them to another website (like desertusa.com) or I try to find an image that has the broad usage agreement, scan it in, and post it on a page in our website.

I hope this has been helpful - this can be a very confusing topic!  Below, I have posted some images that you are welcome to use for your project.  You can link them to www.desertmuseum.org.  If you'd like some additional photos, you are welcome to send me another e-mail.  Please let me know the specific images you want.  Good luck!
