Dear Madeline

Thank you for your request. Our web page is aimed primarily at advertising the museum and we have not considered that individuals/scholars may want to use the material for other purposes. However, the material is of a very generalized nature and we do not think it would matter if the images or text were `lifted' and used elsewhere.

The museum has, naturally, many pictures of its valuable collections (both objects and art) but we have been reluctant to place these images on the web because of this very concern - namely copyright. There have been requests, from gun enthusiasts, for example, for us to provide a list of our gun collection. In this case, we would be very concerned about aspects of museum security as many of our firearms are extremely rare.

The web does bring many opportunities but we also have to consider these other issues. Our web page has attracted responses from people interested in our Egyptian mummy, our Observatory Museum and our Provost Gaol (an early panoptican).

I hope the above answers your inquiry?

yours sincerely
