What is DJIA?

DJIA stands for Dow Jones Industrial Average. It is a list of stocks that is supposed to show how the stock market is doing.

The Dow is currently made up of 30 stocks. Critics complain that the Dow is too small to correctly reflect how the stock market is performing. They say the S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 more accurately show how the Market is doing but the reason the Dow is still the most recognizable stock index is because it has been around for over 100 years.

Charles Dow started DJIA in the late 19th century. Charles Dow was one of the founders of Dow Jones & Co., which also publishes the Wall Street Journal. After Charles Dow died, the Wall Street Journal continued the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
