| Japan is made up of four
large islands. There are approximately 1000 lesser islands that also
exist. Japan is located 16 degrees latitude and sits pretty close
to Russia and China. It is in the "Far East." Japan has a total
area of about 145,000 square miles. Tokyo is Japan's capital a nd
largest city. Over 150 million people live in Japan.
Japan's country name is
Dai (great) Nippon (origin of the sun) and hence the name the land of the
rising sun. Japan's flag has a white background which represents
honesty and purity. The red disc on the flag represents sincerity
and passion. The sun has been a symbol of Japan since the 14th century.
