Welcome to Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba! This is a unique place to live if you're an American because
it is a Navy Base located in a Communist country. The base produces
its own water by reverse osmosis.
One of the most famous
places is the South East Gate. This gate connects Communist Cuba
to free America. In addition to this gate, there is a fence and minefield
separating the base from the rest of Cuba. Very few native Cubans
live on the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station.
Since the base is independent
from the rest of Cuba, one of the popular sayings is, "It's on the barge."
Everything you need from food to clothes to furniture arrives on a barge!
The most common animals
are banana rats, iguanas, tarantulas, land crabs, and deer flies.
Banana rats look like a possum and are always looking for water.
While we were there, the banana rats chewed through garden hoses and radiator
hoses. Land crabs were dangerous at night! My Mom hit one and
it shredded her tire. So, be careful of the wildlife in Cuba! |
