Fidel Castro
Fidel Castro was a young lawyer in 1952.  He wanted to win the election that year, but the elections never took place.  On July 26, 1953, he decided to lead a small group of people to attack Moncada Barracks.  Castro went to prison when the rebellion failed.

In December of 1956, Fidel Castro and over eighty followers went into Eastern Cuba to try to overthrow the ruling dictator.  Most of them were recaptured or killed.  Some of the men hid in the Sierra Maestras.

Elections were finally held in 1958, but it didn't matter.  The rebel army took over on January 8, 1959. Fidel Castro has ruled Cuba ever since.
