The phoenix bird symbolizes resurrection, life after death and immortality.  Only one phoenix exists at a time.  It can live from 500 to 1461 years.  According to Greek mythology, the bird lives by a cool well in Arabia.  Each  morning at dawn it bathes in the water and sings such a beautiful song, the sun god, Apollo, would stop in his chariot to listen.

When it feels death is near, it builds a nest of aromatic wood and sets it on fire.  The bird would be consumed by the flames.  When it is finally burned, a new phoenix springs from the ashes.  The new phoenix takes the ashes in an egg of myrrh to the city of the sun (Heliopolis) and puts the egg on the altar of the sun god.
