Kappas are water spirits who pull little children into water and drown them, as well as attacking and fighting travelers.  They attack animals, including horses, and they cannot live for long on land because they must keep their heads wet.  They have long hair and look like a tortoise with an ape face. They feed themselves with cucumbers, and blood.  They are very intelligent, and can be won over by humans.  They can be friends with wisemen.
