Appearance & Nesting Habits The Western Screech Owl has tufts, large yellow eyes and a black, gray/green, or gray/black bill. The gray face is in a disc shape with a black border. They are marked with vertical lines on their chest. The grown female screech owl wieghs about 8-10 pounds.The screech owl has 2-6 white eggs. Incubation takes about 26 days.The male brings food to the female while she is incubating the eggs. Both parents bring some food for their young. If intruders come too close, adults may attack. The young leave the nest about 4 weeks after hacthing.

Diet Screech owls are carnivores (meat eaters) and hunt in deserts for small mammals such as mice, voles, and pocket gophers. They also eat large insects like beetles and moths. While they are flying, they open their mouth wide and snap down on any food. As the prey is going down their throat, they break the meat and fur from the animal and digest it out into pellets. |

Habitat The screech owl may live in a tree, pole, or maybe a giant cactus. They might live in the mountains too. During the day, the screech owl hide in holes like dens. If you are looking for a screech owl, look in the canopy at the top of the forest. Also if you find a baby owl where you live, please look for their nest and ask a parent to put it back. |
