
Pennsylvania was instituted by William Penn in 1681. By 1776, Pennsylvania was the third largest colony. It is home to the historic city known as Philadelphia where the U.S Constitution was born. Eventually Pennsylvania got a nickname. The nickname is " The Keystone State". Over the years, the state showed a real economic boom. It began to be dominated by oil drilling , coal mining and steel production. The domination lasted into the 20th century and into the new millennium. Pennsylvania is now a leader in railroad equipment manufacturing , food processing, and extractive industries.
The Pennsylvania coin shows "Commonwealth" , the statue which is on top of the Pennsylvania capitol dome . The state's motto and nickname are also placed on the coin in the background. This design was chosen as the winning design because it is a very educational coin about the founding principles of " The Keystone State"
