Christopher Latham Sholes Christopher Latham Sholes was born on a farm in Mooresburg, Pennsylvania on February, 14, 1819. As a young man, Sholes served an apprenticeship with a printer for four years before moving with his family to Wisconsin, where he went to work as a printer and later became editor of his "Bender's Newspaper" in Madison, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin inquirer before he married in 1841. After that he served as editor for the SouthPort Telegraph for the next four years until 1845. He then became a local postmaster and in the 1850s in the State Legislature. Soon Sholes moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to return to editing. Following his move and editing career he decided to spend more time on a favorite sport of his inventing. He met a few other people and developed a typewriter. Later during hard times, he had to sell his patent. |
