MAMMOTHS

The Mammoth was the most popular animal of the Ice Age. The Mammoth bigger than its fellow friend the Mastodon. Mammoth is the common name for an extinct species of the elephant family. Related to the elephants of today, the mammoths had long, curved tusks and reached a length of about 3.2 meters (about 10.5 feet.). They had a shaggy covering of long, thick hair and a prominent hump on the back. Under the fur was three thick layers of fat! They ate grass, willow, fir, and alder leaves. The proper name was "Elephus Primigenius." It means "First Born Elephant." They existed in North America, Europe, and Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. They became extinct about ten thousand years ago. The mammoths always lived in cold climates. They were found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Sculptures and drawings of mammoths have been found in caves in France! The American mammoths are the largest species yet identified; they reached a height about 4.3 meters (about 14 feet)!!
