Brief description of how learning standard is met

1.B.2b

Identify structure of text to improve comprehension. As students are reading Newbery book, he/she will apply reading strategies to improve understanding.

1.B.2c

Continuously check and clarify for understanding. As students are reading Newbery book and creating web site, he/she will clarify terminology and seek additional information for understanding

1.B.2d

Read age appropriate material aloud with fluency and accuracy. Each student will read Newbery passages and author biography aloud at Literary Tea.

1.C.2e

Explain how authors and illustrators use texts and art to express their ideas. Students will create a summary of his/her book for their mock web page. They will also create an author page depicting writing styles.

1.C.2a

Use information to form and refine questions and predictions. As each student is reading his/her Newbery book, they will make predictions and answer questions to those predictions.

1.C.2e

Explain how authors and illustrators use text and art to express their ideas. Each student will choose his/her favorite passage from the book to read aloud at Literary Tea.

2.A.2a

Identify literary elements and literary techniques in a variety of literary works. ThinkQuest team members will read a variety of Newbery books and will be able to identify and discuss use of narration, dialogue, and characterization.

Identify definitive features of literary forms. Students will read various Newbery books and be able to identify genres.

3.A.2

Write paragraphs that include a variety of sentence types; appropriate use of the eight parts of speech; and accurate spelling, capitalization and punctuation. Students will create author biographies, book summaries, and summarize the history of the John Newbery Medal.

3.B.2a

Generate and organize ideas using a variety of purposes and for specified audiences in a variety of forms. Students will study Newbery books and authors and paricipate in a Newbery Tea.

Students will amass and organize files relating to all aspects of the Newbery medal in order to create a learning web site for their peers.

3.B.2b

Establish a central idea, organization, elaboration and unity in relation to purpose and audience. Students will create well-organized and coherent summaries of Newbery books, author biographies, and historical information.

Students will develop a user friendly web site based on the Newbery medal.   The site will be consistent in design and  thorough in its approach.

3.B.2c

Expand ideas by using modifiers, subordination and standard paragraph organization. Students will create summaries of Newbery books, author biographies, and historical information on Newbery Medal.

3.B.2d

Edit documents for clarification, subjectivity, pronoun-antecedent agreement and verb tense; proofread for spelling, capitalization and punctuation; and ensure that documents are formatted in final form for submission and/or publication. Before uploading ThinkQuest web site, students will edit all documents and check all hyperlinks..

3.C.2b

Produce and format compositions for specified audiences using available technology. Students will present their compositions using PowerPoint and the Internet.

4A.2a

Demonstrate understanding of the listening process. Students will be the audience of their peers for Newbery presentations.

4.B.2a

Present oral reports to an audience using correct language and nonverbal expressions for the intended purpose and message within a suggested organizational format. Students will present their summaries and mock web page to their peers, parents, teachers, and administrative staff.

4.B.2c

Identify methods to manage or overcome communication anxiety or apprehension. Students will practice their presentations through creating outlines and repetitive practice.

5.A.2a

Formulate questions and create a basic research plan. Students will determine questions to answer about their Newbery author and research that author.

5.A.2b

Organize and integrate information from a variety of sources. Students will use information from various sources to create author biographies, book summaries, and history of Newbery Medal.

5.C.2a

Create a variety of print and nonprint documents to communicate acquired information for specific audiences and purposes. Students will create a web site containing information about the John Newbery Medal, books that have received this medal, and author biographies quizzes, and summaries of the books.

5.C.2b

Prepare and deliver oral presentations based on inquiry or research. Students will present information about Newbery author and selected book after completing Internet-based research.
