William H. Armstrong
I was born near Lexington, Virginia. I am an American author and educator. I became famous for my novel Sounder (1969) which won A Newbery Medal (1970). It became one of the most acclaimed childrens novels of its time. I have taught history at a private school in Connecticut since 1945. I have written a number of books for young people on history and education. In 1953 I was widowed. My book, Through Troubled Waters (1957), is an account of my experiences as a single parent with three children. My other books include Sour Land (1971), and The Education of Abraham Lincoln (1974).
Bill Brittain
I was born December 16,1930. I was born in Spencerport, New York. I went to Brockport State Teachers'college. My wife's name is Ginny. We have two children, Susan and James. We currently live in Freeport, Long Island. The Wish Giver is my only Newbery winner. My other popular books include Devils Donkey and All the Money in the World. I received the Charlie May Simon Childrens Choice award and Notable Book Award by the American Library Association. I get my ideas from the Junior High students I teach. I write on weekends, summer vacations and other times that I can find. I also write using the name James Knox.
Beverly Cleary
I was born in April 12, 1916 in McMinnville Oregon. I went to college at University of California at Berkley. I am married to Clarence Cleary. I have two children: Marianne Elizabeth and Malcolm James.
Elizabeth Coatsworth
I was born on May 31, 1893 in Buffalo, New York. In 1929 I married Henry Beston, an author. I have two daughters, Margaret and Catherine. I received the Newbery Award in 1931. Since then the book has been reprinted 24 times.
Meindert DeJong
I was born in Wierum, a Frisian village in the Netherlands. I lived there until I was 8 years old. In 1914, my family came to America, where we settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I won the Newbery Medal in 1954 for The Wheel on the School. In 1962, I was the first American to be awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal by the International Board on Books for Young People.
Sid Fleischman
I was born in Brooklyn,New York. I currently live in California today. I was a magician in my teens. I wrote two books that won Newbery Awards.
Jean Craighead George
I was born in 1919. I went to college at Penn State. I am married to John George. I have three children, Twig, Craig, and Luke. I won a Newbery Award for Julie of the Wolves in 1973. In 1960 she also won a Newbery Honor award for My Side of the Mountain. I was a reporter for The Washington Post.
Marguerite Henry
I was born on April 13,1902. I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My mothers name was Anna Henry. My fathers name was Louis Henry. I had two brothers and two sisters. When I was a child, I enjoyed reading and the company of animals. I was the youngest of five children. At the age of seven, I got an illness that kept me from school. I liked school. I died November 26,1997.
E.L. Konigsburg
I, E.L. Konigsburg, was born on February 10, 1930. I graduated from Carnegie University. I married David Konigsburg, and had three children. When my children began to attend school I began to write.
I have had many awards for my books. I won the Newbery in 1968 for The Mixed - Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I was the first person in history to win a Newbery and the Newbery honor at the same time I won two other awards for The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Those awards are, the Lewis Carrol Shelf Award and the Willman Allen Write Children's Book.
Lois Lowry
I was born March 20, 1937 in Hawaii. I went to Brown University. I have 4 children. I started writing in the 1970s. I was born March 20, 1937 in Hawaii
Patricia MacLachlan
I was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I went to college at the University of Connecticut. I moved to Western Massachusetts after I met and married a man named Robert. We had three children, John, Jamie, and Emily.
Katherine Paterson
I was born in China in 1932. I went to college at Kings College. I have four children. Right now I live in Barre, Vermont. My other popular books are Jacob Have I Loved, Come Sing, Jimmy Jo and The Great Gilly Hopkins. I enjoy writing.
Laurence Yep
I was born on June 6, 1948 I am the author of the book Dragon Wings. Dragon Wings won the Newbery award in 1994. Later, the book Child of the Owl was published. It is based on something totally different but still the same in some magnificent way. I have two children. Their names are Mariane, and Malcolm. Now I live in Carmel, California. The first book I wrote was Henry Huggins.
