Hunting

Polar Bears are carnivores. They eat mostly seals, but, they will also eat other animals. During their first summer, cubs get their hunting lesson. Hunting on ice is not easy and catching expert swimmers like seals is even harder.

To catch their food polar bears need a keen sense of smell, a variety of hunting methods, and lots of patience. First, it may have to walk or swim several miles just to find seals. Then, it may find them lying on the ice, swimming in open water, or even swimming under the ice. Wherever they are, the polar bear must be prepared to hunt seals to live.

There are certain times of the year when the hunting is fairly easy and other times it is very difficult. In the spring, most polar bears eat so much they get very heavy. They get so heavy because seals are easiest to find. In the fall and winter, the polar bears have to go on a diet because seals aren't as easy to find.
