When the coaster is going up a hill it gains potential energy.   This gives the coasters "stored" energy.  When the train reaches the top and begins to travel down the hill, there is a different kind of energy called kinetic energy.  Kinetic energy is the energy called motion.  During a ride, energy constantly switches between potential and kinetic.
