How to be Prepared

Some people forecast earthquakes for a living. These people are called seismographers.

These people use the Seismic Gaps Theory. The Seismic Gaps Theory is a zone between moving crustal plates (they are masses of land that cover the earth) where violent tremors (shakes) are overdue (late). The scientists believe an earthquake is overdue in these zones because there is a lot of pressure building between 2 plates. Scientist use this theory to forecast where earthquakes are more likely to occur.

Another way to be prepared is to educate yourself about the area you live in, and the possibility of earthquakes hitting that area.

It is a good to be prepared all the time and have a safety kit. Here are some things that are useful items:

Buildings must be built to earthquake safety standards. During school children have earthquake drills that teach them were to hide, like under a desk.
