Phyllis spent most of her childhood wishing she could read.  She loved to listen to stories that people read to her.  She didn't care about the author or illustrator; she just cared about the story.  In first grade she had trouble reading.  But, by 5th grade she was a wonderful reader and "writing books" was her hobby.  Her first story was published when she was sixteen in a church magazine.

During her college years she studied to be a clinical physiologist.  She went to college until she got her bachelors degree.  She was able to pay her college tuition by writing books.  After she got her bachelor's degree she decided that she wanted to write more than anything.

Phyllis first marriage was when she was 19 years old.  She got married to a young man who soon became very ill.  When he became very ill the family became in need of extra money.  So Phyllis decided that she would write for extra money while she was also being a physical physiologist and being a third grade teacher.
