J.R.R.Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa on January 3, 1892. Tolkien, his sister, and his mother moved to Birmingham, England in 1895.  His father would join them periodically.  Then, after 1 year, his father died from rheumatic fever in Africa.  That same year, his family moved again to the hamlet of Sarehole.

In 1899, when J.R.R. Tolkien was only seven, he took an exam for King Edwards School, but failed.  A year later he tried again and was accepted.  Later that year, they moved again to Moseley to be closer to his new school. Tolkien moved several more times as a child.  In 1904 Tolkien's mother, Mabel Tolkien, died. In 1908 he began college at Oxford.

In 1916  J.R.R. Tolkien married Edith Bratt.  They had three sons; his first son was born in 1917,  his second in 1920, and his third in 1924. His fourth child, Princilla, was born in 1929.  On November 29, 1971, his wife died. In 1926, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis met each other and became great friends.
