Ever wonder what the  initials in "C. S. Lewis" stand for? The "C" stands for Clive and the "S" stands for Staples.  He also had a nick name, like most everyone; people called him Jack.

He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on November 29, 1898.  His parents' names were Albert Lewis and Flora Lewis. C. S. Lewis's mom died from cancer on August 23rd, his father's birthday.

He went to school at Wynyard in Hertfordshire from 1908 - 1910. After that he went to a school called Cherbourg.  Then he went to Cambell College. He was privately tutored from 1914 to 1917.  Finally, he went to college at Oxford University. He was a student there from April until December 1917.

In 1926  C. S. Lewis met J. R. R. Tolkien and entered a life long friendship. Albert Lewis, C. S. Lewis's father, died in 1929 on September 24th.

  In 1956 he married Joy Davidman Gresham, who was 15 years younger. Later that year, the doctors thought Joy was going to die because of bone cancer. During 1957 Joy had a great recovery from bone cancer.   Joy died at age 45, on July 13, 1960.

Then at age 64, turning 65 in a week, C. S. Lewis died on November 22,1963 after  many illnesses, including kidney problems and a heart attack.  He died the exact same day President John F. Kennedy  was assassinated.
