The brain stem is located between the cerebrum and the cerebellum. This part of the brain controls the involuntary muscles. It also regulates heartbeat rate, breathing rate, blood circulation, and digestion. If injured, it causes all those things to stop. A nickname for the brain stem is called the medulla. The brain stem is connected to the body’s back spine. The brain stem has three parts; the pons, the midbrain, and the medulla oblongata.
